In the 1920’s German neurologist Hans Berger confirmed the existence of electrical activity in the human brain. He was the first to record and name Alpha brain waves and then Beta brainwaves. He also noticed that Alpha activity decreased and Beta activity increased as the eyes opened.

Since then, much research has been published and the chart shows the most common brain waves and their activity levels during a normal 24 hr cycle.

Fast forward to the 1950's . . .

During the Cold War, the U.S. military was concerned as to why their radar screen operators would suddenly fall into a trance-like state. A physician, William Kroger was hired to investigate. He concluded that the rhythmic “blip” of the radar was “pulling” the radar operators into a trance state. These findings compelled Kroger to team up with Sydney Schneider of the Schneider Instrument Company of Ohio to construct and market the first electronic clinical photic stimulator, called the “Brainwave Synchronizer.”

You will notice that the beta range of 14-30 Hz is where we should be during our normal waking hours.

Most think that ADD/ADHD children are hyper brainwave people spending their time in the Gamma range of above 30 Hz.

In reality, they spend too much time in the “daydreaming” Alpha range. So our goal in entrainment for ADD/ADHD is to sync the brainwaves to an external stimulus of 14-30 Hz.
